IV Therapy Decoded: What's Actually in Your Drip (and Why It Matters)

IV therapy is one of the fastest-growing services at Zen Regenerative Wellness — and across the country. But I'll be honest: the industry has a clarity problem. Between the celebrity endorsements, the "hangover cure" marketing, and the pop-up IV bars offering mystery cocktails, it's hard for patients to know what they're actually receiving and whether it matters. As the Clinical Director who mixes, administers, and monitors every drip that leaves our infusion suite, I want to pull back the curtain.

Why IV Instead of Oral?

The fundamental advantage of IV administration is bioavailability. When you take a vitamin orally, it must survive stomach acid, be absorbed through the intestinal lining, pass through the liver (first-pass metabolism), and then enter systemic circulation. Depending on the nutrient, oral bioavailability can be as low as 5-20%. IV administration bypasses the entire digestive system, delivering nutrients directly to your bloodstream at 100% bioavailability. The difference is not marginal — it's transformational.

This matters most for nutrients that are poorly absorbed orally (like magnesium and B12), nutrients needed at supraphysiological doses for therapeutic effects (like Vitamin C), and for patients with compromised gut function who can't absorb nutrients efficiently regardless of how many supplements they take.

Our Core Drip Formulas

The Myers' Cocktail

Developed by Dr. John Myers in the 1960s and refined over decades, this is the foundation of modern IV therapy. Our Myers' formula contains: Vitamin C (high-dose ascorbic acid), B-Complex (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6), Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin — the bioactive form), Magnesium chloride, Calcium gluconate, and Zinc. This combination addresses the most common micronutrient deficiencies in the modern diet and provides broad-spectrum support for energy production, immune function, nervous system health, and cellular metabolism.

  • Best for: General wellness, fatigue, immune support, stress recovery
  • Infusion time: 30-45 minutes
  • Frequency: Weekly or bi-weekly for maintenance; more frequent during illness or high stress
  • Most popular at Zen for: Professionals, frequent travelers, and patients establishing a wellness baseline

NAD+ Infusion

Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide is the master coenzyme of cellular energy production. Every cell in your body uses NAD+ to produce ATP — and levels decline dramatically with age. Our NAD+ infusions (250mg or 500mg) are the most intensive drips we offer, administered slowly over 2-4 hours to minimize the temporary flushing and chest tightness that can occur with rapid infusion. The results are consistently among the most dramatic our patients experience: mental clarity, sustained energy, improved sleep, and a sense of cellular "reset."

  • Best for: Anti-aging, cognitive optimization, chronic fatigue, addiction recovery, neurodegeneration
  • Infusion time: 2-4 hours (slow drip for comfort)
  • Frequency: Monthly for maintenance; weekly for intensive protocols
  • Combines well with: Myers' Cocktail pre-drip, glutathione push post-drip

High-Dose Vitamin C (Riordan Protocol)

At supraphysiological doses (25-75g), Vitamin C transitions from antioxidant to pro-oxidant — selectively targeting abnormal cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. Our Riordan protocol is used as an adjunctive therapy for oncology patients (in coordination with their oncologist), as a powerful immune system activator during acute illness, and as a systemic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory for chronic conditions. Pre-screening with a G6PD enzyme test is required.

  • Best for: Immune activation, oncology support, chronic inflammatory conditions
  • Infusion time: 60-120 minutes depending on dose
  • Frequency: 2-3x/week during active protocols; weekly for maintenance
  • Requires: G6PD screening, renal function assessment, and physician oversight

Glutathione Push

Glutathione is your body's most powerful endogenous antioxidant — produced in every cell and essential for detoxification, immune function, and protection against oxidative damage. We administer glutathione as a "push" (a concentrated dose delivered over 5-10 minutes) at the end of most IV sessions. Patients often describe an immediate sense of brightness and clarity. Glutathione is particularly effective for skin brightening, liver support, heavy metal detoxification, and post-alcohol recovery.

Hydration & Recovery Drip

Our most straightforward formula: a liter of lactated Ringer's or normal saline with electrolytes, B-vitamins, and optional anti-nausea medication (ondansetron). This is the gold standard for rapid rehydration — whether you're recovering from travel, exercise, illness, alcohol, or simply running on empty. It's also the base for our post-surgical recovery drips at Zen Recovery Care.

What to Expect During Your Visit

IV sessions at Zen take place in our private infusion suites — comfortable recliners, ambient lighting, and the kind of environment where you actually look forward to your appointment. Most patients read, work on their laptops, or simply rest. We monitor you throughout the infusion, and our clinical team is on hand to adjust drip rates and ensure your comfort. After your session, you can return to normal activities immediately — most patients report feeling noticeably better within hours.
