I run every HBOT session at Zen personally, and the most common thing I hear from new patients is: "So... I just lay in a tube?" The short answer is yes. But what happens physiologically during that hour in the chamber is anything but simple. Let me walk you through exactly what an HBOT session looks like — from arrival to post-session — and explain why everyone from professional athletes to post-surgical patients is making this a regular part of their recovery.
Before You Get In
You arrive at Zen and I'll meet you in our HBOT suite — a private room with our clinical-grade monoplace hyperbaric chamber. Before your first session, we review your health history, current medications, and any contraindications. You'll change into comfortable cotton clothing (no synthetic materials inside the chamber for safety reasons). We remove jewelry, watches, and electronics.
I explain the pressurization process and teach you ear-clearing techniques — similar to what you'd do on an airplane during descent. This is the only part of the session that requires any active effort from you.
The Session
You lie comfortably inside the chamber — it's more spacious than most people expect. The chamber is transparent, so you can see the room around you. Many patients watch content on a tablet (visible through the chamber wall), listen to music, or simply close their eyes and rest.
I begin pressurization gradually over about 10 minutes, reaching our treatment pressure of 2.0 ATA (atmospheres absolute). During this pressurization phase, you'll feel pressure in your ears — this is normal and resolves with swallowing or gentle jaw movement. Once we're at pressure, that sensation disappears completely.
For the next 60 minutes, you're breathing 100% oxygen at twice normal atmospheric pressure. Here's what's happening inside your body:
- Oxygen dissolves directly into your blood plasma at 10-15x normal concentrations
- This oxygen reaches tissues that red blood cells can't easily access — damaged, inflamed, or poorly vascularized areas
- Stem cells are mobilized from bone marrow (studies show up to 800% increase in circulating stem cells after a series of sessions)
- Anti-inflammatory pathways are activated at the genetic level
- New blood vessel formation (angiogenesis) is stimulated in oxygen-deprived tissues
- Mitochondrial function is enhanced — your cells' energy production improves
- Harmful anaerobic bacteria are inhibited (relevant for wound healing)
Throughout the session, I monitor the chamber pressure, oxygen levels, and check in with you periodically through the intercom system. Most patients describe the experience as deeply relaxing — many fall asleep.
After the Session
Depressurization takes about 10 minutes. You may feel slightly light-headed for a few minutes as your body adjusts — this passes quickly. Most patients report feeling energized and mentally clear immediately after. Some describe a "warm glow" sensation as oxygenated blood reaches previously under-perfused tissues.
Why Athletes Use It
Professional sports teams invest millions in HBOT chambers for their facilities. Here's why:
- Accelerated recovery from soft tissue injuries — sprains, strains, and contusions heal significantly faster
- Reduced post-game inflammation and muscle soreness
- Faster recovery from concussions and traumatic brain injuries (HBOT is one of the only therapies showing consistent benefit for TBI)
- Enhanced wound healing after surgery — critical for athletes returning from ACL repairs, rotator cuff surgery, etc.
- Improved sleep quality when used consistently
- Cognitive clarity and reduced brain fog
LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, Michael Phelps, and countless other elite athletes have publicly endorsed HBOT as part of their recovery arsenal. At Zen, we see the same benefits in our patients — whether they're professional athletes or weekend warriors recovering from knee replacement surgery.
How Many Sessions?
The number of sessions depends on your goals. For general wellness and performance optimization, most patients benefit from 10-20 sessions (2-3x per week). For specific conditions like post-surgical recovery, TBI, or chronic inflammation, protocols may extend to 30-40 sessions. We design your protocol based on your specific situation and adjust based on your response.
